I tried to organise my books. They had other ideas.

I have always had an unreasonable fondness for books. Give me an empty shelf and, sooner or later, I’ll find a way to fill it with things I want to read, things I probably won’t read for years and things I bought simply because they looked too interesting to leave behind.
This drawing seems to have inherited that habit.
I started with stacks of books, then another stack, and another. Before long, they began leaning, wobbling and occupying space with very little regard for structural engineering. Some are neatly stacked, others look as though they have been arranged by someone who has never actually seen a bookshelf.
There is something oddly satisfying about drawing them this way. A book doesn’t have to contain words to become a book in my head. A few uneven rectangles, some lines suggesting pages and suddenly I have a little library taking shape.
Perhaps that is what my bookshelves look like inside my head too: lots of accumulated knowledge, very little organisation and the occasional completely inexplicable object sitting in the middle of it all.
I think I’m beginning to see the resemblance.
