I started with circles and lines without any particular idea of what I was drawing. Then, somewhere along the way, my brain started finding things in the marks.
I saw owls. Then mosquitoes. An old man with a beard appeared. One shape reminded me of liverwort. Another, for reasons known only to my zoology textbooks, became the urinary bladder of a frog.
And eventually I saw a whole colony of rats, their eyes glowing back at me from the darkness.
I hadn’t drawn any of them deliberately.
They simply appeared.
Perhaps that’s one of the pleasures of doodling. You put a few marks on paper, and then your brain, with all its accumulated clutter of memories, books, biology lessons and childhood images, starts playing along.
I draw the marks. My mind supplies the creatures.
